Toyota marks 75 years with interactive family tree
Toyota is celebrating 75 years in the automotive business with style -- and a lavish, fully interactive timeline. We spotted it on Japanese Nostalgic Car, and it's been consuming our productivity ever since.
The sheer amount of information the timeline presents can be a bit overwhelming at first. Poke around, however, and you'll be rewarded with more information about every Toyota, ever than you ever wanted to know.
Here's how it works:
First, decide whether you want to search by make, body type or year, and then browse through the respective lists to find a vehicle you're interested in learning more about.
Selecting a vehicle takes you to a segment of a vast, intricate family tree connecting Toyotas of the past and present. Small notations indicate when models entered and exited specific markets and when major changes -- such as the transition from rear-wheel to front-wheel drive -- occurred.
Once you've honed in on your model of choice -- say, for example, the Toyota Masterace Surf -- click on its respective photo icon. A popup window will appear with a model description, specifications and the plant in which the car was built. There's also a helpful name origin section, and for some models, scans of period catalogs and video features.
At any point in time, you can select a new model via a bar on the left-hand side of the screen.
As if that wasn't enough, there's also a supplementary engine-type chart -- useful for making sense of the often confusing engine codes Toyota employs as well as showing when and where specific engines made an appearance.
We're not sure what percentage of the Toyota workforce was tied up during the production of this incredible family tree, but we're glad it's out there.
And, by the way, happy anniversary, Toyota.

Thank you, Cheng T., for providing us your recent 5-star review on Yelp!
We have been taking our 2002 Prius and 2008 Xb to MST for all services.
We have nothing but excellent services, thanks to Corrie F, out regular contact.
They are always completed quickly, and with a complementary car wash!!The water pump replacement on the Prius was quick and reasonable in cost. The Scion also had 2-3 warranty fixes on its wheel wheel, pillar rattling, and dash rattling. All completed perfectly to our satisfaction. This not to mention the waiting room is most comfortable, with full WiFi so we can work with our laptops while waiting.Compared to lesser experience and comments from Toyota dealerships that are closer to out homes+work places, we still are compelled to use MST that is not the closest to us. Because of all the above, MST is also out preferred dealer for new vehicles, ie this 2008 Xb, and more in the future.Keep up the good service please.2 very happy customers.

New TV Spots, Mini Documentaries Advance the ‘Scion Story’ Brand Campaign
The real lives of five young entrepreneurs form the backbone of Scion’s newest national ad campaign, “Make Every Second Count,” that launched at www.scion.com and will continue with broadcast, print and online content developed with creative agency ATTIK. The new ads and online mini documentaries build on the “Scion Story” brand campaign launched last fall to showcase the company’s longstanding commitment to individual passions.
“We began telling the story of Scion’s history and core beliefs; now we’ve given the stage to individuals who embody that same passionate spirit in the ‘Make Every Second Count’ campaign,” said Doug Murtha, Scion vice president. “By showing how Scion fits into real lives and real goals, we shine a spotlight on the brand’s unique approach to empower its customers.”
The five people featured were each given a handheld video camera and a Scion vehicle for two weeks. After beginning to film their daily activities, they worked with award-winning documentary filmmaker Doug Pray (Hype, Art & Copy) for suggestions and content. From the authentic content, Pray and Scion created three national broadcast spots and five, online mini documentaries for the Scion YouTube channel.
The broadcast spots are built from one-second video segments of each participant’s story, passion and Scion experience. As the five individuals demonstrate dedication to pursuing dreams and careers, the campaign concept “Make Every Second Count” was born.
The participants were:
- Bryant Terry – an Oakland, Calif., chef, author and activist – driving the iQ
- Travis Hayes Busse – a San Francisco music promoter, talent buyer and manager – driving the tC
- Daniel Farahirad – a Los Angeles bicycling activist and retailer – driving the xB
- Levi Maestro – a Los Angeles filmmaker, entrepreneur and web personality – driving the FR-S
- Lisa Nativo – a Los Angeles food truck founder and owner – driving the xD
“I truly enjoyed working with these personalities and helping them film themselves in spontaneous one-second shots that captured their lives and a larger story,” Pray said of directing the project. “I’ve always been impressed by the magnitude of Scion’s support for the creative community in the 10 years I’ve worked with the brand. This project is no different with the broader pursuits featured in this campaign.”

Toyota i-Road Concept A Low-Cost Answer For EVs
On paper, electric cars sound like a great solution to humanity’s mobility woes. But their high cost means that most people these days just can’t afford to own an EV. Toyota’s solution is a new concept called the i-Road, which promises to offer emissions free, low-cost transportation for up to two people.
While the limited information released about the Toyota i-Road doesn’t explicitly mention price, automakers are quickly realizing that if they want to sell EVs, they had better cut the price. The limited range and long recharge time of the current crop of EVs means most people will still need a second car. In Europe, owning a single car is very expensive, which is why the Renault Twizy, a low-cost urban EV, has proven so popular with European consumers.
Perhaps that is what caused Toyota to put together this concept, which will be revealed in full at the Geneva Motor Show in March. A two-passenger, pure electric vehicle with the right price could prove to be a big hit with the Old World…if Toyota goes through with making it and pricing is right.
